Our Lady of Good Counsel
Our Lady of Good Counsel is a beloved Marian title centred in Genazzano, Italy, where a famous image of the Virgin Mary has been venerated since the 15th century. According to tradition, in 1467 a miraculous image of Mary holding the Child Jesus appeared on the wall of the Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel, just as the church was being restored through the faith and sacrifice of a local widow, Blessed Petruccia. The image quickly became a source of wonder and devotion, drawing pilgrims who sought Mary’s guidance in times of uncertainty.

The title “Good Counsel” highlights Mary’s role as a wise and loving mother who leads the faithful to her Son, Jesus Christ. Catholics turn to her especially when facing difficult decisions, trusting that she who pondered all things in her heart can help them discern God’s will. Popes throughout history, notably Pope Leo XIII, strongly promoted devotion to Our Lady of Good Counsel, seeing in her a powerful intercessor for the Church and the world.
Spiritually, Our Lady of Good Counsel reminds Catholics that true wisdom flows from a deep relationship with Christ. Her gentle presence encourages believers to listen attentively to God’s voice, to seek truth with humility, and to act with charity. By entrusting their choices and struggles to Mary under this title, the faithful find reassurance that God’s guidance is always near, especially in moments of doubt or confusion.
