Our Lady of Good Success

Our Lady of Good Success refers to a Marian devotion that began in the early 17th century in Quito, Ecuador, through the visions of Mother Mariana de Jesús Torres, a Spanish Conceptionist nun. According to her testimony, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to her under this title beginning in 1594, requesting that a statue be made and venerated. The devotion emphasizes trust in God’s providence and Mary’s maternal guidance, especially in times of spiritual darkness and confusion.

In these apparitions, Our Lady spoke prophetically about a future crisis in the Church, particularly a weakening of faith, morals, and priestly vocations in the 19th and 20th centuries. She warned of widespread impurity, loss of innocence among the young, and attacks on the sacraments, while also assuring that God would never abandon His people. These messages are often understood by Catholics as a call to vigilance, prayer, and fidelity to authentic Church teaching.

Our Lady of Good Success placed special emphasis on reparation, devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, and prayer for priests. She asked that sacrifices be offered to console the Heart of her Son and her own Immaculate Heart, especially for sins committed against purity and reverence. The title “Good Success” does not refer to worldly achievement, but to the ultimate success of God’s plan, accomplished through humility, obedience, and perseverance in grace.

The devotion was officially approved by the local Church authorities in Quito, and the statue requested by Our Lady is still venerated today at the Convent of the Immaculate Conception. For many faithful, Our Lady of Good Success is a reminder that even amid trials and suffering, God’s victory is assured. Mary stands as a mother who prepares her children for difficult times while leading them with hope toward Christ, who is the true source of all good success.
