The Sacred Heart of Jesus

The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus centres on the boundless love, mercy, and compassion that Christ holds for all humanity, symbolized by His Heart—aflame with love, encircled by thorns, and pierced for our salvation.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus 02

  • Origin:
Although love for Christ’s Heart is rooted in Scripture—especially in His pierced side on the Cross—the formal devotion grew significantly in the 17th century through the visions of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, who received Christ’s desire for a feast honouring His Sacred Heart and for reparation for sins. The Jesuits strongly promoted the devotion, which was later widely embraced by the Church.

  • Structure:
    The devotion includes several expressions:
    • The Litany of the Sacred Heart

    • The Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart

    • The First Friday Devotion (Holy Communion in reparation)

    • The Sacred Heart image enthroned in homes

    • The Feast of the Sacred Heart, celebrated on the Friday after Corpus Christi

  • Purpose:
Its purpose is to draw believers into deeper love for Christ, to make reparation for sins committed against His love, and to conform one’s heart to His humility, gentleness, and mercy.

  • Spiritual Value:
Devotion to the Sacred Heart brings consolation, healing, and sanctification. It leads the faithful to trust in Christ’s mercy, grow in charity, and find refuge in His Heart. Jesus promised special graces—particularly the grace of final perseverance—to those who honour His Heart faithfully.

  • When to Pray:
You may pray the Sacred Heart prayers any time, especially when seeking comfort, mercy, or strength. Traditionally, Catholics pray them:
    • Daily, for personal consecration

    • On First Fridays, as Jesus requested

    • During the month of June, dedicated to the Sacred Heart

    • On its feast day (Friday after Corpus Christi)
